The Big Merino

Posted by Rob on January 27, 2013 in Travelogue

We’ve come across quite a few “Big” things in our travels around Australia and to be honest many have not really lived up to their big reputation, but the Big Merino in Goulburn is a bit of an exception.

What is “The Big Merino”? Quite simply it is a 15-metre tall concrete merino ram, located in Goulburn, New South Wales, Australia. Built to celebrate the wool industry in the area the big sheep is not just a giant statue it also houses an exhibition about the wool industry. If that doesn’t excite you, why not climb up into the rams head to have a look out of his eyes. What’s not to like about that?

If a concrete sheep sounds a bit hard and cold perhaps you’ll like all the lovely fluffy wool related products in the gift shop, which it should be mentioned is very well stocked with some unusual items. Oh and it’s right by a good servo and some food outlets so an ideal place to have a break if you are on the road.
